The narrative follows a young Harvard man named Will Andrews. He decides to drop out of the university to join an expedition in Butcher's Crossing, Kansas. As he immerses himself in this world of buffalo hunting, the hunters he meets, as well as the various characters involved in the trade, give him different perspectives on life. The narrative draws inspiration from the 1960 novel by John Williams.
