Synopsis by Mark Deming
In this downbeat drama, Ewa (Dagmara Bak) is a shy young woman who has left her home in Poland for the Netherlands in search of work as an au pair. Introverted Ewa is hired by Ilse (Rifka Lodeizen) and Peter (Guy Clemens), an outgoing couple who have a young child and are expecting another. While Ilse and Peter try to help her feel at home, Ewa has a hard time fitting in with her new surroundings, and while she strikes up a friendship with Aga (Natalia Rybicka), a fellow Polish émigré doing domestic work, she had trouble shaking her anxieties, especially after she has a run-in with a criminal haunting the neighborhood. In Onder Ons (aka Among Us), first-time director Marco van Geffen presents his story from three different perspectives, with each one revealing different facets of the characters involved. The film received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
