Turning political revolution from theory into fact sets the stage for this documentary from filmmaker Charles Gervais, which uses as its example the rise to power of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. Chavez was elected to Venezuela's highest office in 1998 as a failing regime led to widespread demand among the people for political and social change. While Venezuela has long been a poor nation, it is rich in oil, and Chavez has attempted to use this precious assets as a means of narrowing the gap between rich and poor and creating a more just society. In 1999, Chavez spearheaded a drive for a new constitution, and has the support of the people, who have re-elected him to office twice. However, Chavez is also an outspoken critic of the United States, who he believes has helped to keep his nation poor and powerless, and the Bush administration has been even more critical of Chavez, though American firms still do business with Venezuela. Can Hugo Chavez bring a new breed of democratic socialism to Venezuela without falling prey to the corruption that has crippled similar efforts -- and can the nation survive as an adversary of the United States? Revolucion was screened in competition at Toronto's 2007 Hot Docs International Film Festival.
