Synopsis by Mark Deming

A young girl is cut off from her mother as well as the culture of the 21st Century in this independent drama from Turkey. Zephyr (Seyma Uzunlar) is an eleven-year-old girl who lives in a remote village in the Black Sea Mountains with her elderly grandparents (Sevinc Bas and O. Rustu Bas). Zephyr's family are part of a community of farmers and they raise nearly all of their own food, living an ascetic life cut off from much of the modern world. Zephyr's mother (Vahide Gordum) is an activist who travels the world and rarely spends time with her daughter, and Zephyr feels a tremendous sense of loss without the presence of her mom. One day, Zephyr is thrilled to discover her mother has finally come back, but the relationship between them is chilly, and it doesn't help that she soon announces that she'll be leaving again before long, setting the stage for a family tragedy. Zephyr was the first feature film from writer and director Belma Bas; with the exception of Vahide Gordum, Bas cast the film entirely with non-professional actors.
