Synopsis by Mark Deming

Filmmaker Claude Mourieras directed this documentary which chronicles the voyage of a handful of women from the theocratic Afghani village of Zartale to Chagheharan, the capitol of the Ghor province, in search of medical care. The people of Zartale struggle with a tuberculosis epidemic while lacking the money or resources for proper treatment; many families must settle for having holy men pray for their children rather than take them to a physician. In Le Voyage des Femmes de Zartale, a number of mothers brave the long trip to Zartale to see that their children receive the care they need, and en route they also get a glimpse of a different culture where women are offered opportunities denied them in Zartale. Le Voyage des Femmes de Zartale (aka The Zartale Women's Journey was screened as part of the 2006 International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam.
