Review by Janiss Garza

This is one of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy's best early silents. Although their personas wouldn't seem so fully formed in other films made the same year, this is definitely the Laurel and Hardy everyone knows and loves. The film is loaded with funny gags and its two reels are basically divided into three segments. The first is helped along capably by Otto Lederer who plays the exasperated bandleader that is saddled with Laurel and Hardy in his band. The duo continuously mix up their sheet music, and Hardy has the treacherous task of trying to snatch one of the pages from under the conductor's rhythmically stomping feet. The second segment involves dinner at the boarding house where the boys have been living. They're kicked out in short order, but not before they've ruined their soup. Lastly they're street musicians who instigate a battle in which a crowd of men rip each other's pants off. This is a classic tit-for-tat segment, with pants flying through the air. It didn't take long for Laurel and Hardy to gain popularity once they were paired up -- this film is one of the reasons why they caught on so quickly.
