Review by Jeremy Wheeler

Top of the heap as far as both cliché counts and rousing dance sequences, You Got Served is one of the leaders in the line of urban drama dance flicks that have littered the theaters since the new millennia. Fans of flashy, synchronized dances will be very pleased with the multiple crumped-up dance-offs that energize the film when it's not getting bogged down in "life on the streets" melodrama. To be sure, the days of happy-go-lucky dance flicks like Breakin' and Roller Boogie are long gone, though even then, the increasingly serious plot can be a pretty fun exercise in hilarity if one is familiar with the trappings of the genre. Go down the checklist of standard plot procedures, and you'll likely find many stereotypical examples here, such as the best friends who are now enemies because of a girl -- or even better, the little kid who has to die at the beginning of the emotionally charged third act (played here by Malcolm David Kelley, who just one year later found fame on the TV airwaves as Walt in Lost). But really, it's the dancing that truly counts -- and whenever the two warring teams square off against each other, the end result is eye-popping, choreographed splendor filled with spunk, style, and loads of foot-tappin' attitude. Also be on the lookout for none other than Britney Spears' ex, Kevin Federline, who can be seen with an obnoxious ponytail in the rival gang's dance troupe.
