Paul Nkamani has traveled from his home country Cameroon through the Sahara to the coast of Morocco. Here, Paul and filmmaker Jakob Preuss get to know each other. Jakob is on an exploration along Europe's outer borders. Shortly thereafter Paul gets a coveted place on a dinghy to Europe, but the crossing takes a tragic outcome: half of his fellow travelers die, but Paul survives. The director sees the shattering images of salvation on TV and goes on a search for Paul.
After Paul has already spent two months in deportation, Jakob finds him finally in a Spanish Red Cross home. When Paul decides to travel to Germany because of the economic crisis in Spain, Jakob has to decide: Should he actively support Paul in his quest for a better life or stay in the role of the watching filmmaker?
