The popular screen team of Francis Ford and Grace Cunard were co-stars and co-directors of the historical drama Washington at Valley Forge. Those familiar only with Ford's "drunk" characterizations in the films directed by his brother John might be surprised to discover that, once upon a time, Francis Ford quite cut a dashing figure on screen. Many of the incidents depicted herein were drawn straight from the history books, including the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere and the arrival of Lafayette. Woven into the proceedings is a fictional account of how Washington's life is saved from assassins by a beautiful and self-sacrificial innkeeper's daughter (Cunard) -- a plot device "borrowed" from the Alfred Noyes poem The Highwayman.
