Ho Nan (Ma Ju-feng) is the second in command of a multigenerational gang of bandits. They have the misfortune to be earning their living during the reign of one of the Chinese emperors who is working hard to reduce banditry throughout the empire. In the story, soon after they have taken a village girl (Chang Ying-chen) captive (they want her village to ransom her), they are on the run from Imperial troops. Before long, most of the older members of the gang have been killed by Imperial soldiers, and the remaining ones have recognized Ho Nan as their leader. Meanwhile, the girl, who has been raped and beaten by Ho Nan, has somehow taken a fancy to him. The remaining gang members vote to pull off one last robbery and then break up.
