Review by Michael Costello

Peter Hyams' mindlessly derivative buddy cop-science fiction-conspiracy film starring action icon Jean-Claude Van Damme makes one appreciate what director James Cameron brought to the table in the Terminator films. The story, which takes place in a future where time-travel is a reality, focuses on "timecop" Van Damme's efforts to keep bad guys from traveling to the past to tamper with the present. It makes so little sense, even on its own terms, that comprehension is a distant chimera. But with one's mind on hold, there are enjoyable elements here, such as Van Damme's well-choreographed fight scenes, some interesting special effects, and a fine, energetic performance by Ron Silver as the evil Senator who intends to become president through nefarious means. Van Damme has mercifully few lines, but as usual with him, they are still a few too many. The film had a respectable, if not overwhelming run at the box office, demonstrating the action hero's continuing appeal.
