Review by Paul Gaita

Adults-only producer/director Radley Metzger bought this innocuous 1957 French-language weepie, which featured only a brief snippet of nudity and a suggestion of a lesbian relationship, and then shot an additional five minutes of nude scenes with new actresses (among them future adult film star Georgina Spelvin) for the sexploitation crowd. The resulting film, retitled The Twilight Girls, is relatively tame by current standards, but was explicit enough to land it in hot water with the New York State Motion Picture Commission when it was submitted for licensing in 1961 (Metzger later won the case). Its subsequent success at the box office helped to pave the way for more spicy imports through Metzger's production and distribution company, Audubon Films. Exploitation students will best appreciate the film as yet another example of how distributors lured audiences with advertising that was much more titillating than the actual film itself. First Run Features' full-screen presentation includes the original theatrical trailer, as well as previews for two other Audubon titles, The Frightened Woman and The Fourth Sex.
