Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Written by Torch Song Trilogy author Harvey Fierstein (who also provides the voice of the title character), the made-for-cable animated special The Sissy Duckling is a study of what it means to be "a bird of a different feather." Sensitive duckling Elmer is a source of embarrassment for his macho father and an object of ridicule for other ducks his own age. Unable and unwilling to defend himself against bullies, and clearly not a "leader of ducks" like his take-charge dad, Elmer dreams of leaving his pond and going somewhere where he will be appreciated for his intellect and resourcefulness. He finally gets this opportunity, only to make a dramatic return just in time to rescue his father -- and the rest of the flock -- when hunters invade the forest. The Sissy Duckling was first telecast September 14, 1999, on HBO.
