This attempt at a crossover vehicle for martial arts film hero Jimmy Wang Yu is as action-packed as one might expect and plenty of fun for viewers in the right mood. Brian Trenchard-Smith's script is basically an excuse for a series of elaborate fight and stunt sequences but it rolls along at a nice clip once it gets going. Even better, Trenchard-Smith's direction is stylish and inspired, giving the whole thing a 'Bond film'-styled glossiness while delivering the expected grit and punch in the action sequences: highlights include a foot chase that becomes an all-out brawl in a restaurant and a car chase on narrow roads that packs in an exhausting amount of mayhem. Wang Yu doesn't always seem at ease in his unfamiliar surroundings (and the English dubbing given to him is indifferent at best) but he dazzles in the many fight scenes and he is provided a worth adversary in George Lazenby, who chews the scenery with relish as a thoroughly hateful playboy villain. In short, The Man From Hong Kong might be a little too outrageous and "comic book" in tone for those used to mainstream action fare but fans of 1970's exploitation films and kung fu fans will find an explosive, unexpectedly lavish delight.
