Even if Robert Taylor seems a mite long in the tooth to be courting 20-year-old Patricia Owens, his moral authority anchors a well-written, and well-told, western melodrama that doesn't pull any punches. Richard Widmark may be guilty of overreaching in key scenes -- and when was he not? -- but Taylor's solid presence, a furious shoot-out and some fine location filming in the Sierras keep interest alive.
