Horror-genre director Mary Lambert brings few flashes of originality to this teen thriller, which unfolds like a bizarrely sanguinary episode of the television series Dawson's Creek. Although a valiant effort is made to address class issues, the well-to-do teens of The In Crowd bear about as much resemblance to real human beings as the caricatures in a typical daytime TV soap opera. A fascinating subplot regarding the mental illness of lead character Adrien Williams (Lori Heuring) seems designed to draw intriguing parallels between Lori and her new best friend Brittany Foster (Susan Ward), who becomes vengefully unhinged herself when her social status is threatened. Unfortunately, the comparison is simply dropped in favor of standard genre thrills, and The In Crowd never quite becomes what it strives to be, a Fatal Attraction (1987) for the Generation Y audience.
