Review by Craig Butler

The Horror of It All is one of several early 1960s films that tried to combine horror and comedy. Few of these succeeded in their attempts, and Horror is one of the least successful of this mini-genre. Ray Russell's screenplay might have been telescoped and used as an amusing episode of The Addams Family or The Munsters, but as a project for the big screen, it's woefully lacking. The set-up at least benefits from a double "fish-out-of-water" premise, with Pat Boone's American-ness contrasting with the British-ness of the rest of the cast, just as his normalcy contrasts with their eccentricity. But the gags are only intermittently amusing and the mystery portions of the script are simply weak. Terence Fisher's surprisingly lifeless direction doesn't help matters; it seems this man who was so at home with horror films had no real flair for comedy. Boone is his usual self, shifting between woodenness and hamminess, and Erica Rogers is only slightly better. The rest of the cast, though, gives it their all, and they do manage to make Horror come alive enough to make it watchable.
