Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Running all of two reels (approximately 30 minutes), The Gray Sentinel was produced by the Broncho production unit of Thomas H. Ince Productions. Like many Ince films of the era, this is a Civil War drama, focusing on the exploits of a Union spy. Opposing the spy at every turn is a handsome fisherman, who though not a soldier is sympathetic to the Confederate cause. The fisherman not only send the Yankee spy into the next world, but also wins the heart of the heroine, a lighthouse keeper's daughter. Though producer Thomas H. Ince was billed as the director, Ince was well known as a "credit-grabber" who tended to minimize the contributions of his talented directorial staff.
