This misfired attempt at dark comedy is neither dark enough nor funny enough to qualify as a solid example of its genre, and contains a disproportionate amount of violence and gross-out humor at points where wit and cleverness would have been more satisfying. Television director Michael Dinner creates one of his few feature offerings here, but he and cinematographer Juan Ruiz-Anchia opt for a somber look and dark color scheme that are at odds with the film's mostly light, goofball script. Also creating unnecessary tension is a plot diversion into dramatic territory as central character Bobby Bartellemeo (Richard Dreyfuss) attempts to reunite with his long-lost daughter Olivia (Carrie-Anne Moss), a narrative decision that robs an excellent supporting cast -- particularly the engagingly angry Joey "Bats" Pistella Burt Reynolds -- of sufficient character development. The Crew (2000) was released in the same month as a better film, Space Cowboys (2000), about four geriatric pals called to return to their former, dangerous profession.
