Synopsis by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

In episode five, host Michael Moore presents a short film called "The Choice." In the film, Moore and his staff set up a congressional campaign in New Jersey for Ficus, the potted plant. When the registrar refuses to enter Ficus' name on the ballot because the plant is not a registered voter, Moore promotes a write-in campaign. Meanwhile, bumper stickers and posters are printed, press conferences held, and Ficus challenges Representative Frelinghuysen to a debate. As knowledge of the campaign broadens, other Ficus candidates begin campaigns in a number of states. Eventually, a national convention is held and Moore presents the candidates -- 21 fig plants -- together on-stage. The activity in the campaign office concentrates on phone calls to editorial boards of the local newspapers and debate over which ads to run. Finally, the New Jersey Ficus receives endorsements, and while the candidate appears to have done well in the primary, the registrar is unwilling to count the write-in votes for the potted plant.
