Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar

This documentary, part of the 20th Century With Mike Wallace series from CBS News and the History Channel, looks at the heated battle between the press and the armed forces. Narrated by series host and CBS News correspondent Mike Wallace, this episode relates both sides of the conflict between these two groups, starting with newspaper coverage of World War I. With the coverage of the two World Wars, journalists and the military worked together, with the papers not printing what the military wanted withheld from public record. Beginning with Vietnam, the relations between the press and the military heated up, as press coverage included everything, even information the military wanted kept secret from the American public. 20th Century With Mike Wallace features interviews with both top-level journalists, including Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, and Morley Safer, and top military personnel, including Generals Norman Schwarzkopf and George Crist.
