Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar

This documentary, part of the 20th Century With Mike Wallace series from CBS News and the History Channel, takes a look at the threat of nuclear weapons, from the Americans, Russians, and other countries around the world. Narrated by series host and CBS News correspondent Mike Wallace, this episode gives the history of nuclear warfare, from the atomic bombs dropped in WWII to the "Star Wars" race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in the 1980s during the Reagan administration. Political and military insiders talk about the real danger of a full-scale nuclear obliteration and how the break-up of the Soviet Union changed things for the better and the worse. 20th Century With Mike Wallace also features interviews from historians who compare the nuclear weapons situations of the Cold War era to the situation today.
