Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar

In this documentary, part of the 20th Century With Mike Wallace series from CBS News and the History Channel, series host and CBS News correspondent Mike Wallace traces the history of the war on drugs from the 1960s to the end of the 20th century. From the acid of the 1960s and '70s, to the cocaine of the 1980s, to crack and heroin of the 1990s, the drug problem seems to be escalating rather than diminishing. This episode features interviews with legal and law enforcement officials who talk about what went wrong in America's fight to control the drug culture. Even the creation of a "Drug Czar" in the government did not prevent the drug importation from rising in the 1980s and 1990s. This episode of 20th Century With Mike Wallace looks to the streets of the inner cities to examine the drug culture firsthand and to see if there are any positive signs foreshadowing a win in the war on drugs.
