Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar

This documentary, part of the 20th Century With Mike Wallace series from CBS News and the History Channel, takes a close look at the ongoing troubles with the Balkan region and what used to be the country of Yugoslavia. Narrated by series host and CBS News correspondent Mike Wallace, this episode depicts some of the background of the political troubles in this area and how the collapse of Communism led to continual wars being fought in this part of the world. By using footage from the CBS News archives, 20th Century With Mike Wallace examines how a new leader, who was a former Communist functionary, took over and led what was formally Yugoslavia into years of battles and despicable crimes against humanity. Also featured are interviews with reporters who covered activities in this region and their personal accounts of this horror.
