Review by Craig Butler

A remake of Love Is News with the same leading man (Tyrone Power), That Wonderful Urge is an enjoyable if slight little trifle. Made in 1948, past the heyday of the screwball comedy, it's not quite as daffily enjoyable as the original, but it benefits from the experience that Power gained in the decade or so since the original was made. In Urge, Power's performance is more assured and forceful; he's been through this situation before and he's also gained in maturity as an actor, so he knows how far to push in scenes and when to rein things in a bit. He also is well matched with Gene Tierney, who could turn in a somewhat wan performance on occasion but who here is in very fine form; indeed, this is Tierney's best comedy performance and she presents a character who is totally winning, even at her most exasperating. The chemistry between the two stars is also invaluable to this sort of enterprise. Jay Dratler's screenplay is finely honed; if a bit convoluted, it never gets too much in the way. Robert Sinclair's direction is unfussy and pays close attention to pacing while making sure the very photogenic stars are given their due.
