Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

In 1964, a small group of theater students in Poland got together and formed a theatrical troupe based upon the theories of Jerzy Grotowski, a man who developed a comprehensive theory of theater and acting training. They were also politically opposed to the communist regime then in power, but went basically unnoticed by the government for almost twelve years. Beginning in 1976, their work began to be progressively more regulated and restricted. By 1986, they were completely unable to peform, and most of the members sought exile in Western Europe, making tours and meeting with other experimental theater groups. This documentary follows them in rehearsal and interviews, and screens brief excerpts from a performance piece of theirs.
