Review by Craig Butler

One of the best entries in the Tarzan series, and probably the one that comes the closest to capturing the essence of the character as created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan's Greatest Adventure is a rollicking action film with a much better script than is usual for a jungle flick. The creators of Adventure have essentially taken a traditional Western-style script, set it in Africa, and placed Tarzan in the role of the good-guy-gunslinger (without guns, of course). The structure works very well, and it gives the lead character room to grow. Letting him actually have a real vocabulary, as well as both an advanced intellect and a finely-honed instinctual ability, adds immeasurably; we get to see Tarzan as a character who has one foot in two different worlds and doesn't really feel at home in either. He's civilized and savage -- and the extremes of both sides are presented more clearly here. He also has a very worthy adversary in Slade, whose villainy is given more depth than is usual. John Guillermin directs with flair and a keen sense of what works in an action film -- and he takes good advantage of the actual jungle shooting (a first for a film in this series). Anthony Quayle is superb as the evil Slade, as are Niall MacGinnis and a young Sean Connery. As Tarzan, Gordon Scott is better than in his previous outings; he's still not a great actor (and as a result is a bit of a weak link in the film), but he's physically as impressive as ever. Tarzan's Greatest Adventure is a treat for fans of the "Ape Man," but even non-devotees should enjoy it quite a bit.
