Synopsis by Mark Deming
Heidi DeRuiter directed this documentary which explores the social and emotional ramifications of obesity among children. DeRuiter and her camera crew visited a "fat camp" in upstate New York, and through interviews with the children and their counselors, she charts the impact society's negative view of overweight people and frequent harassment from their peers has on these children's self-image. The film also takes a look at the struggle many of these children face as they try to lose weight.
