Review by Craig Butler

Suddenly It's Spring is a good title for a film, especially a little romantic comedy. Unfortunately, the screenwriters seem to have been so pleased with themselves for jumping on this title that they neglected to write a good screenplay to support it. Based solely on its script, Spring is indistinguishable from dozens of other harmless little gag-riddled romances of the period. The problem isn't so much that the plot and basic situations are so time-worn, although a little whiff of originality here wouldn't have hurt. It's more that the laughs are only so-so, the dialogue pretty familiar and the characters don't have a great deal of spark to them. It certainly could be worse, of course, and it must be noted that the screenplay doesn't actively annoy or irritate; it just doesn't come to a great deal of life. This isn't the fault of the cast, which tries very hard, especially stars Paulette Goddard and Fred MacMurray -- with both stars looking pretty great, by the way. Director Mitchell Leisen should have been able to pump more verve into Spring; perhaps he had just been down this road too many times before. The result is certainly pleasant enough -- but not really anything more.
