Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
Director Elisabeth Gujer's technique in the appropriately titled Stilleben, is to use short takes and a narration that illustrates the thoughts of the characters on the screen -- which creates a sense of alienation from her story. This may be intentional because her main protagonist is a middle-aged widow whose life has gone flat, bland, and meaningless. One day she meets a lively and affirmative antique dealer who seems to have the sparks that she is missing in her life. They begin a relationship, but the question is whether or not there is enough underneath the surface to keep it going.
