Review by Craig Butler

In general, opera singers such as Stars Over Broadways's James Melton, had a difficult time making the transition to the silver screen. Part of this was the "fault" of the performers themselves, as the style of acting they had developed for the grand opera simply didn't work on screen. But some of the blame must also be laid upon the stories upon which their films were built, which often seemed to think that there wasn't much need to pay too much attention to what went on between songs. Stars is actually one of the stronger opera films, story-wise; it's not great by any means, but the story is clearly discernible, and the dramatic machinations are all properly in place. It's also, unfortunately, not terribly absorbing, but Stars does have its performers to help it over the rougher patches. Melton is no great actor and he lacks the on screen pizzazz that would overcome his lack of acting talent, but he's am amiable personality with a terrific voice, and he makes his musical numbers count. Jane Froman also lights up the screen in song, although she's given far too little to do, either musically or dramatically. Pat O'Brien handles the agent role with great ease, and Frank McHugh and Marie Wilson add very welcome comic relief. Harry Warren's score is tuneful and engaging, although only one is staged with any brio. All in all, Stars is a minor musical, but it's a pleasant way to mindlessly wile away a little time.
