Review by Hans J. Wollstein

"She eats like a bird -- a peck at a time," says the wisecracking receptionist of Madame Helene's reducing establishment, describing one of the overweight society ladies frequenting the place. The wisecracking receptionist is played by Pert Kelton, and Madame Helene is beauteous Adrienne Ames, who was something of a society lady herself, albeit of the slender kind. Slander House, filmed at low-budget Grand National for something called Progressive Pictures, is quite amusing, and a showcase of sorts for Ruth Gillette, a Broadway comedienne usually wasted in films, but here well cast as a Metropolitan opera diva with girdle problems. Director Meville Shyer usually helmed cheap melodramas, but obviously had a hidden gift for farce and it remains a shame that he didn't do more.
