Synopsis by Mark Deming
Provincetown, Massachusetts is a Cape Cod resort town that comes alive each year during the summer vacation season. One of Provincetown's more unique attractions is a local pub, the Crown and Anchor, where every Monday night during the summer Ryan Landry hosts an open-mike "talent contest" he calls "ShowGirls." While "ShowGirls" has become a home for a number of local drag performers, lip-sync artists, comics and folks whose art knows no genre (such as a gentleman who dances while clad only in a layer of marshmallow fluff and breakfast cereal), Landry insists that his show is a true open microphone where no one with the ambition and the nerve to get up on stage is turned away. "ShowGirls" has become an institution in Provincetown, with a mixture of gay and straight locals and tourists selling out the Crown and Anchor each week, and at the end of the season a special award is given to the year's most remarkable act. Filmmaker C. Fitz offers a look at the joyous madness of "ShowGirls" and profiles Landry and a few of his stars -- among them "Della Catesen," "Deborah Downer" and "Dina Martina" -- in the documentary ShowGirls, Provincetown, MA, which was shot during the 2007 season and also features interviews with a number of the loyal fans who come out to see the show week after week. ShowGirls, Provincetown, MA received its world premiere at the 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
