Director Gregory LaCava is not one of the "greats" of Hollywood's Golden Age, but when he was on (as in My Man Godfrey), he proved that he could turn out a truly classic product. She Married Her Boss is not top drawer LaCava, but it does have the bright and snappy pacing combined with a certain finesse that he often brought to his work. Boss also includes a wonderful comic "ballet" for star Claudette Colbert that demonstrates both the actress' flair for physical comedy and the director's fondness for the gently absurd. Boss is a small film, a little too calculated for its own good, but it has a certain amount of heart and a good number of sturdy laughs throughout. Colbert is her charming, resourceful self in the leading role, endearing without being cloying and forceful without ever resorting to shrewishness. Melvyn Douglas matches her well, but the part is clearly subordinate to Colbert's. The large supporting cast is solid, with helpful contributions from the bratty Edith Fellows and the prissy Katherine Alexander. Boss is no classic, but it's the kind of film about which viewers may very likely find themselves feeling quite fond.
