Review by Craig Butler

An amiable and engaging "armed services" comedy, See Here, Private Hargrove doesn't have the punch it probably did when originally released. With World War II still going on, Hargrove had a context in which its silly shenanigans carried an extra weight. Without that context, the film comes across as little more than a standard situation comedy -- but one which is quite pleasant to sit through. Certainly Hargrove is helped enormously by the presence of Robert Walker in a role that really launched him as a star. He's perfect casting, and in great form, playing the comedy for all its worth but keeping one foot in reality. It also helps that there is tremendous rapport between him and his chief co-star, Keenan Wynn. There's plenty of rapport between him and love interest Donna Reed as well, but it's really the Wynn-Walker relationship that is key to Hargrove's success. The two seem to be inevitable pals, even if one is the other's patsy, and the way they work together is a joy. Reed is also aces, filling out a role that she could easily have walked through, and there's also great support from Robert Benchley and the rest of the crew. Tay Garnett's direction is smooth and effortless, which helps a great deal. Hargrove is no classic, but it's a good, solid "laugher."
