Review by Buzz McClain

Director Mark L. Lester brings his proven sense of economy (remember Commando?) to this non-pretentious and entirely effective thriller. It's The Fugitive Meets Kiss the Girls, with several very effective twists along the way. Lester's direction is sinewy -- and often B-movie grotesque -- and the mystery of the killer is cleverly concealed until the final showdown. That finale may be uncomfortably over the top for some tastes, but this film isn't trying to be Silence of the Lambs, and thankfully so. Viewers will be biting their knuckles -- to keep from laughing at the resolution -- and while the thrills are cheap, the intent is sincere, which goes a long way. Michael Madsen is no one's idea of a romantic leading man, but here his gravelly voice and hardened features serve him well as the misguided father seeking redemption. Seductive Jamie Luner, who does not work nearly enough, makes Madsen's job easier by seeming truly turned on by him. The swamp locales are effective, the pace is brisk, the story is coherent, the actors are inspired -- this is one of those titles that viewers will just have to throw up their hands and take a chance on.
