Review by Hans J. Wollstein

A true sophisticate, Constance Bennett was badly miscast in Rockabye, a tepid tearjerker which RKO had purchased from Gloria Swanson. Today, the film's plot rings almost unbelievably hollow and Bennett's at times overwrought performance makes a modern viewer wonder about her enormous appeal in the early years of sound. Reportedly, Joel McCrea was brought in by George Cukor in order to salvage a film derided by preview audiences but both McCrea and Bennett seem ill at ease. Happily, Rockabye is saved on the finishing line by Amazonian comedienne Jobyna Howland, who is capital as Bennett's tough-talking, bibulous mother.
