Review by Hans J. Wollstein

With the most ill-fitting title of all time, Robin Hood of Texas, while set in the Lone Star State, comes with no Robin Hood in sight, cowboy or otherwise. Instead, there are such 1940s tough guys as Archie Twitchell (here billed as Michael Branden), James B. Cardwell, and John Kellogg, not to mention a hard-boiled femme fatale, played by the pert Republic stalwart Adele Mara, and she does a surprisingly convincing job of it, too. Gene Autry is in it as well, of course, but quite a bit of his screen time is actually taken up by ace stuntman Joe Yrigoyen, who single-handedly conquers the bad guys in a climactic battle on a runaway buckboard. The result of all this is a fast-moving and rather noisy comedy-drama with just a hint of the great outdoors thrown in for good measure. With Robin Hood of Texas barely in the can, Autry founded his own company and made a deal with rival Columbia Pictures.
