Synopsis by Mark Deming

A woman who is looking for herself finds more than she bargained for in this drama from Slovakia. Vanda (Katharine Lorenz) is a German airline attendant who has begun to feel unsettled in her life as well as in her relationship with her boyfriend (Florian Stetter). When she unexpectedly loses her job, Vanda feels the need for a change of scenery and decides to pay a visit to her grandmother, who she hasn't seen in years. At first, the journey to Slovakia is a tonic for Vanda, but she's alarmed when she discovers that the country town where her family has lived for years is now a haven for human smugglers, who arrange passage for illegal aliens for a price. Vanda becomes acquainted with Miro (Lukas Latinak), one of the smugglers, and an attraction develops between them, even though she can't respect what he does and he already has a wife. Navrat bocianov (aka Return Of The Storks) was Slovakia's official submission for the 2008 Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.
