In New York's Crown Heights, racial tensions build as neighbors collide. It's a tough pplace to keep your dreams alive. Michael Stallworth, a black teenager, wants to succeed but finds himself giving in to society's pressures. Judy Burke, an ambitious TV reporter, hungers to do serious reporting even to the point of denying her Jewish heritage to get ahead. When a neighborhood drug deal erupts in violence and murder, Michael and Judy's feelings of alienation and frustration turn to outrage. Both take drastic measuresto confront their anger and fears about who they are, realizing that ultimately what separates them is the one thing that can bringthe community together.
