Review by Jeremy Wheeler

Where to start? Gary Busey as a born-again Pomeranian -- does the weird world of straight-to-video cheese get any better than this? It really doesn't, as this slice of heavenly family film gone terribly wrong proves. Quigley might indeed work for the kiddies, but really, the only shelf life this sucker has will be thanks to the curious fans of the outrageous. For them, it's all about seeing how the heck the filmmakers pull off this one and, boy, is it somethin'. With what looks like a $1.05 budget and a lunatic leading man who must have been on-set for about two days, the task of throwing this together could probably warrant a book someday. As it is, the afterlife sequences reek of bootleg set dressing as they were simply filmed on a blank soundstage with couches and chairs covered in white sheets and that's it! One can just hear the director say "Good enough!" as his crew sets up the 20th setup of the day. Sadly, Busey isn't given the chance to voice-over any of the dog sequences, which really is too bad. Then again, it makes the canine-to-human transitions that much more wildly bizarre when, before your eyes, Busey magically appears all collared up on a leash begging for doggy treats. By the end, no one will be surprised how formulaic the rest of the pic is, so it's best to just bask in the craziness and ponder how low an actor has to stoop before taking on this kind of project. Amazingly, Busey wasn't done with this kind of shamelessness, since just two years later he returned in The Gingerdead Man, which finds the zany actor playing a serial killer who turns into a walking, talking gingerbread cookie -- for real.
