One of three popular 1980s films driven creatively by writer/director John Hughes and starring Molly Ringwald (the other two being Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club), Pretty in Pink is a relatively unimaginative teen romance flick. Ringwald stars as Andie, an unpopular senior surviving the day-to-day trauma of being financially underprivileged at a school run by wealthy brats. When Blane (Andrew McCarthy), an uncharacteristically sweet boy from the in-crowd, asks her out, their ensuing dream-come-true relationship proves troubling for everyone involved. Unleashing their respective dismay on the unwitting lovers are Andie's eccentric friend Duckie (Jon Cryer), who has a not-so-subtle crush on her, and Blane's snide best buddy Steff, well-played by James Spader. Though infused with little originality, Pretty in Pink boasts an impressive supporting cast and a cheery prom finale that should satisfy those looking for a little more than a stereotypical Cinderella story.
