Synopsis by Mark Deming

A road trip across Europe turns into a game of romantic and sexual musical chairs in this drama from director Sebastien Lifshitz. Sam (Yannick Renier) is a twenty-seven year old who has a tenuous relationship with his family, so when he hears from his mother for the first time in years, he hops in his battered old Ford and sets out on a road trip from his home in France to Spain, where she is staying. Initially Sam is traveling solo, but when loneliness starts to get to him he picks up a pair of hitchhiking teenagers, Lea (Lea Seydoux) and her brother Mathieu (Theo Frilet). It isn't long before Lea, who is pregnant, makes it clear that's she's attracted to Sam, and Mathieu, who is gay, also makes himself available to Sam. In time, Sam pairs off with Mathieu, and Lea turns her attentions to another traveler, Jeremie (Pierre Perrier). But the young drifters find themselves in a tough spot when Sam abruptly decides to move on without them. Plein Sud (aka Going South) was an official selection at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.
