Review by Michael Costello

Andy Wilson's first (and one hopes last) directorial effort, this tired neo-noir thriller has little going for it except three fine performances. When Eugene Sands (David Duchovny), a surgeon whose substance abuse has cost him his license, performs emergency surgery on a small-time hood, the man's boss (Timothy Hutton) offers the down-and-out doc a job patching up his oft-punctured crew. Another ill-fated attempt at terminal hipness, Wilson's over-the-top film has little to offer in the way of credible plot or characters, and no one seems to be more aware of this than Duchovny, who plays his intriguing scenes with Hutton as a sort of separate movie-within-a-movie. The actor's familiar catatonic persona serves him well here as he assembles an assortment of quizzical glances, opaque stares, and meaningful silences into a surprisingly compelling performance. The gifted Hutton rises to the challenge, quietly implying an insatiable appetite for casual violence, while silently reminding the surgeon that he might soon require his own services. As the delectable creature shooting come-hither stares at Duchovny while her mob boss boyfriend isn't looking, Angelina Jolie makes one easily appreciate why he might risk death.
