Synopsis by Olivia Cantor
Written by Kata Wéber and directed by Kornél Mundruczó based on their Polish stage play, the film focuses on a couple struggling to stay afloat after a personal tragedy. Young husband and wife tandem Sean (Shia LaBeouf) and Martha (Vanessa Kirby) lose their baby to a home birth gone awry. Martha tries to cope with the loss while trying to manage Sean’s erratic reaction to their grief. She feels an added burden as she’s up to face the midwife that performed the birth in a trial for criminal negligence, with occasional disturbances from her overbearing mother, Elizabeth (Ellen Burstyn).
