Synopsis by Mark Deming

A national hero turns to the other side of the law in this Bollywood drama based on a true story. Paan Singh (Irrfan Khan) grew up in a small farming community and joined the Army as a young man to serve his country. Paan's headstrong nature didn't make him an especially good soldier, but when he was assigned to his company's track and field team, his commanders discovered he was a was an excellent runner and hurdler, and Paan became a medalist at the Indian National Games for seven years in a row. After Paan left the military, he intended to go home and return to farming, only to discover his family's land has been caught up in a property dispute. Paan tried to work out the problems reasonably, but when a skirmish between the rivals left Paan's mother dead, he decided the time for diplomacy was over. Paan became a bandit, at first stealing back what was rightfully his and then using his skills as a thief to redress the grievances of the disadvantaged across the nation. Paan Singh Tomar received its North American premiere at the 2010 South Asian International Film Festival in New York City.
