Review by Hans J. Wollstein

Although a notorious failure that ruined Evelyn Laye's possibilities in Hollywood, One Heavenly Night is actually a pleasant, if slightly dated, piece of theatrical flim-flam, better, in fact, than many more successful screen operettas. Evelyn Laye was vastly popular in London's West End, where she was Noel Coward's original choice for +Bitter Sweet, and it is easy to see why. Not nearly as rigid as some of her competitors, Laye had an easy way with a line and was quite the looker. Unfortunately, she is hamstrung a bit here by the wooden John Boles, who could single-handedly bring a film to a screeching halt, and the somewhat obtrusive comedy of Leon Errol and Hugh Cameron, the latter playing the count's assistant. Lilyan Tashman, meanwhile, is delightful as the prima donna and the music is delightful.
