Review by Derek Armstrong

Continuing to flog a concept that should have stopped short of a franchise, Oh God! You Devil finds George Burns getting to play both sinner and saint this time, and doing it with a fair amount of the one-liner vaudevillian charm that was his running shtick. But the idea of this crotchety old crank as God, a delicious notion back in the days of Oh God!, has run its course, and the devilishness does not spice things up as much as one would hope. Underneath, providing flimsy narrative, is a fairly ordinary morality story about being careful what you wish for, which has nothing new to say about the fleeting glories and underlying hollowness of fame. As in many films involving supernatural or heavenly guidance, there are enough groan-worthy puns and other ironic lines to force a crooked smile now and again. But screenwriter Andrew Bergman seems to have saved most of his good material for Fletch the following year, and Burns simply looks eager to collect paychecks between his sustaining appearances on Bob Hope variety specials.
