Synopsis by Mark Deming

Director Andrea Sedlackova made his debut with this dark drama about a family in crisis. In the early '70s, Miroslav (Vladimir Skultety) and Jana (Monika Hilmerova) are half-brother and sister who live together with their father. The siblings, just edging into adolescence, have begun having incestuous relations with one another; when their father finds out, it leads to an ugly confrontation that leads to the father's death. Thirty years later, Jana (Ivana Chylkova) and Miroslav (Karel Roden) are adults well into middle age; while both have spouses to deal with, they have not been able to shake their desire for one another, and their feelings only become more destructive with the passage of time. Karel Roden's performance earned him a Czech Lion award nomination at the 2001 Czech Film and Television Academy Awards.
