Synopsis by Mark Deming

It's been estimated that nearly three million people have left Ecuador to go to Spain in search of work. While many Ecuadorian exiles are happy with their new lives in Spain, some are stranded by circumstance in their adopted homeland, and know that if they went home to visit their loved ones, they would probably not be allowed to return to Spain. Filmmaker Estela Ilárraz profiles the Ecuadorian community in Madrid in the documentary Próxima Estación (aka Next Station), as some map out new lives in their new home, others dream of the day they can return to Ecuador, and others still try to hold on to the traditions of the past while making a new life in a new land. Next Station was an official selection at the 2008 London International Documentary Festival.
